Hula Hoop Times Tables

If you’re finding it painful to get your child to practice math lessons learned throughout the school year and her skills are slipping, try this mental and physical multitasking game to get your child back into the swing of things. This physical coordination reinforcement activity uses a hula hoop to get the mental juices flowing. It's especially fun with two or more players taking turns and keeping score, but it works just as well with one.

What You Need:

  • Hula hoop
  • Pad of paper
  • Pencil
  • Bowl or hat
  • Timer

What You Do:

  1. Make a list of the multiplication tables your child has learned during the school year. Your child will be reflecting on and reinforcing these lessons as she looks back on what she’s learned. Space these out on the page so that you will be able to cut each item into a separate strip of paper. Once the list seems substantial, cut up the paper, fold it in half, and place it in the bowl or hat.
  2. Now let the hula thinking begin! Start by having one person pick a piece of paper from the bowl, read the category out loud and get ready with the hula hoop. The other player will be the note taker, and should write down the times table category and name of the Hula Hooper for score-keeping purposes. Put the paper back in the cup once read, so it can be picked it in the future.
  3. The hula hoop player starts hooping, while reciting the times table category that she has chosen. For example, if she has chosen the 6 times table, she should recite "6, 12, 18, 24 ..." as she keeps the hula hoop up. Using a stopwatch or other kind of timer, the note taker keeps track of how long the hula hooper keeps the hoop going while still managing to recite the answers. The turn ends when the hula hoop falls to the ground and stops or the hooper can't come up with any more products.
  4. Now the next player gets a turn, following steps 2 and 3, until everyone gets a chance to play and all of the multiplication tables are practiced by each player. If a player chooses a number they've already done, they should place the paper back in the cup and choose again.

Map Multiplication Tables Game

Practice math while learning the geography of the the U.S. in this fun, competitive game. Using a deck of cards, players multiply two cards they draw from a deck. If they get them correct, they can then say the name of the state they are going to color in. If they get the multiplication problem correct, their turn is over and it's the next player's turn. Whoever completely colors in their map of the U.S. first wins!

What You Need:

  • Deck of playing cards with the face cards (jacks, queens and kings) removed
  • Photocopied black outlined map of the US, one per player
  • Colored pencils, or markers
  • 2 or more players

What You Do:

  1. Ask one of the players to shuffle the deck and place it face down in the center of the table. Have another player pass out maps and either colored pencils or markers to the players.
  2. Have the kids label each of the states with their correct state names.
  3. Then, in each of the states, have the kids write in different products they'll encounter while multiplying the different cards in the deck together.
  4. Have the players determine the value of the face cards. Tell them that for the purpose of the game aces = 1.
  5. Choose one player to start. Ask her to draw two cards and place them face up so the other players can see. She must correctly state the product that results when the two cards are multiplied together.
  6. If she answers correctly, she should find the state containing that product.
  7. Before she can color it in, she must correctly identify the respective state's name.
  8. If she doesn't come up with the right product, and follow up with a correct state name, play moves on to the next player.
  9. The player who's first to successfully color his map in completely is the winner.
Helpful Tip: Make this game even more challenging by asking players to name the capital city of each state before coloring they're allowed to color it in.

Play Two-Minute Multiples

Learning math vocabulary isn't exactly a walk in the park, but as Mary Poppins taught us, if you make a game out of it, almost anything can be fun. This game reinforces the meaning of the term “multiples” and is fast enough to hold the attention of your fourth-grader. Play it one-on-one, or include siblings and friends! No one will forget multiples after participating in this quick review, cleverly disguised as a game.

What You Need:

  • Paper and pencils
  • Small paper bag
  • 9 index cards
  • Timer

What You Do:

  1. Cut three sheets of paper into approximately 100 cards.
  2. Quickly write the first ten multiples for numbers 2-10 on the cards, one number per card.
    • 2: 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20
    • 3: 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30
    • 4: 4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32,36,40
    • 5: 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50
    • 6: 6,12,18,24,30,36,42,48,54,60
    • 7: 7,14,21,28,35,42,49,56,63,70
    • 8: 8,16,24,32,40,48,56,64,72,80
    • 9: 9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81,90
    • 10: 10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100
  3. Write the numbers 2 through 10 on the index cards.
  4. Give each player a scrap sheet of paper and a pencil. Shuffle the multiples and place them in the small paper bag. Place the index cards face down on the table.
  5. To play, each player chooses an index card and writes his number on the scrap paper. The goal is to correctly write down all the multiples of your number. Remember: a multiple of a number is the product of that number and another number. For example, 15 is a multiple of 5 because 5 x 3 = 15.
  6. Set a timer for two minutes. Pull one multiple from the bag and read it aloud. Tell players to write it on their papers only if it is a multiple of their number. For example, if Player A's number is 8 and the multiple picked from the bag is 32, Player A should write 32 on his sheet (8 x 4 = 32).
  7. Continue pulling multiples for two minutes. When time is up, each player counts the multiples written next to his number. The player with the most multiples wins! Pick new numbers and play another round.
If the number picked from the bag is a multiple of more than one number being played, treat it like a tie and have each player write the multiple on his sheet. Feel free to lengthen or shorten the two-minute time limit, depending on the ability and attention span of the players.
Once your child masters multiples, try this game to practice factors.

Tic-Tac-Toe Multiplication

There are plenty of fun ways to practice multiplication facts, and this game is definitely one of them! Every third grader needs to work towards memorizing his times tables. Try reviewing those facts tic-tac-toe style! Set up your board and start solving those multiplication problems. Three in a row wins!

What You Need:

  • 9 sheets of white paper
  • Black marker
  • Two players

What You Do:

  1. Let your child draw a standard, nine square tic-tac-toe grid on each of the nine sheets of white paper with the black marker.
  2. Then, help your child place each of the nine sheets of paper in a 3 x 3 square, with the tic tac toe grids facing up.
  3. Next, take over duties and write a random multiplication equation in each of the 81 spaces.
  4. Explain to the players that the rules are exactly like those of standard tic-tac-toe.
  5. Players take turns trying to solve the various problems in the grids.
  6. When players successfully solve a problem, they put either an X or an O in the square.
  7. Whoever gets tic-tac-toe on a given grid can turn the sheet over and mark it with a giant X or O.
  8. To win, a player must get three sheets in a row.

Schoolyard Multiplication

Your child's multiplication skills will help him move around the schoolyard in this fun game. Once you've drawn a school map, outlining favorite locations such as the main building, swing sets, lunch room and basketball court, it's time to race around the yard while mastering the all-important times tables.

What You Need:

  • Pair of dice
  • White paper for game board
  • Black marker
  • 1 marker per player (beans, coins, foam shape, etc.)

What You Do:

  1. Encourage players to come up with a list of their favorite locations at school.
  2. Have each player draw the locations in a large oval shape on their respective piece of paper, then tell them to connect the locations with lines to create the game board (see picture). Make sure the main school building is one of the drawings, as this will be the starting point.
  3. Ask each player to come up with different numbers that are products of potential dice rolls. This means, of course, that prime numbers shouldn't be included. Also, keep the numbers under 36.
  4. Encourage them to assign each location a different number they happened to come up with.
  5. Have all of the players place their game pieces on their main school buildings.
  6. Decide which player will go first (we played roshambo) and have this player roll the dice.
  7. Have the player find the product of the two numbers he rolled and say it out loud. If the product is the same as the number of the next location on the game board, he can move his game piece to the next location on his game board. If he doesn't end up rolling the product he assigned to the next location, must stay where he is.
  8. Whoever goes all the way around the schoolyard first wins!
Variation: For younger players, use addition. The highest number on the game board should be 12.
This activity is a great opportunity to introduce the concept of probability. Before the kids create their game boards, explain to them that there are certain product that will occur more frequently than others and hint that it may be in their best interest to pick the "popular products for their game boards so as to increase their chances of winning.

Target Multiplication

Who said practicing times tables can't be fun? Create some target cards, a factor board, grab some counters and get ready to practice multiplication. This game will help get your kid one step closer to memorizing her times tables!

What You Need:

  • 4 sheets of white paper
  • Marker
  • 2 counters (little piece of green paper)
  • Scissors

What You Do:

  1. Using the marker, have your child write the numbers one through ten on one of the sheets of white paper. This is the factor board that you'll place counters on to reach the target numbers on your cards.
  2. Have her set the sheet to the side.
  3. Next, help her create an even stack with the remaining three sheets of white paper.
  4. Using the scissors, have her carefully cut the stack of white papers into multiple square cards.
  5. Next, use the marker to write a random non-prime (divisible by more than just the number and one) number 1-100 on each of the cards.
  6. On the other side write "target" as these cards feature your target numbers. You'll need to figure out which numbers on the factor board to mark with your counters in order to arrive at the products on the cards.
  7. Help her mix the the cards up.
  8. Create a stack of the target cards, the sides with the word "target" facing up.
  9. Draw a card read the number aloud.
  10. Encourage her to find two numbers on the factor board that can be multiplied together to arrive at her target number and place the counters on them.
  11. She should continue this process until the target number deck is depleted.
  12. If your child is still having fun, shuffle the deck and keep the game going!
Target Multiplication is even more fun to play with a whole group of kids. You also might want to throw in some additional counters and challenge your kid to find all the factors she can for a given target number.

Multiplication Lesson

We started our unit with a quick brainstorm of multiplication and I was very impressed with my results. Here is the list my students came up with:

12 x 12 = 144 - Those are called facts.
Anything times 0 equals 0.
Anything times 1 equals itself.
3x4=12 is just like 4x3=12. We call that a fact family.
You can draw a picture of multiplication by using circles and sticks.
It is repeated addition.
You can draw it by putting 4 dots down one said, and three dots across and then fill it in. (She knew about an array, but didn't know what it was called.)
It is like skip counting.

I must say...well done 3rd grade teachers...WELL DONE!

That is a pretty good list for the first weeks of 4th grade. We spent the next two days talking more and more about arrays. You know...building up our math vocabulary, learning the difference between rows and columns, and finding arrays all over the classroom.

Then, we made our Multiplication Posters to show off what we know. First, I showed them my example. Sorry, I forgot to take a picture, but it was really nice. I promise.

I wrote in my best handwriting, used different colored headings for each quadrant, organized my array by color (i.e. red row, blue row, etc.), and made my equal groups using all the same kind of stickers.

Then, I let them go. Not one turned out just like mine.


Naturally, many of the arrays were a hodge-podge of colors.


They also used as many different kinds of stickers as possible.
Please ignore the incorrect multiplication fact in the upper right corner. *shakes head*


All and all though, the posters turned out pretty great. It was a great review for kids on multiplication.

I would love to say that these were 100% my idea, but y'all know...I'm the Teaching Thief. I combined two terrific ideas I found through blogging and Pinterest.

First, I pinned this over the summer. (Mine looked a lot more like this. I'm a rule follower. My students are clearly more creative. *wink, wink*)




I used this same concept in the past, but only with drawings. I loved the addition of stickers and food. It made it is WAY more entertaining. Unfortunately, I don't know who to credit with this marvelous idea, so if it was you, please let me know.

I also found another great idea from Mr. B's Beach Brains. Um... edible arrays?! Yes, please.




And so...our edible multiplication posters were born. My kiddos had a blast putting together the posters and they make a really nice display in the classroom. Very colorful and fun!

Pumpkin Math



How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?

This story is about a group of kids who are asked by their teacher to figure out how many seeds are in 3 different pumpkins. They talk about the size of the pumpkins, estimating and counting ideas. Some kids count by 2's some by 5's and some group the seeds into piles of 10. There is also some great information in this story about how to estimate how many seeds a pumpkin has just by looking at the outside.

I love this lesson because it combines my love of math literature with counting and estimating routines. I began this lesson by presenting my students with 2 pumpkins. I did this lesson with second graders but it would work with other kids K-3 with some small adaptations. One was a very small Jack be Little pumpkin and the other was a larger pie pumpkin. I asked them to estimate which one had more seeds. Everyone was convinced that the larger pumpkin would have a lot more seeds. We made some estimates but they were really all over the place ranging from 17-1000.




Next we cut the pumpkins in half and adjusted our estimates based on what we saw. The estimates for the smaller pumpkin ranged from 80-200 and the estimates for the larger pumpkin ranged from 101-320.

Kids worked in small groups and got all the seeds separated from the other guts. When I do this lesson again, I will be sure to have more pumpkins because despite this being a smaller group of students, there were to many kids working on each pumpkin. I would recommend no more than 4-5 kids per pumpkin for optimum working conditions. Kids continued to adjust and refine their estimates as they put the seeds all in one place. It was obvious to all students that there were more seeds in the large pumpkin than the smaller one.


After a quick rinse of the seeds, the groups counted them mostly grouping into 10's. We came to the conclusion that the small pumpkin had 134 seeds and the large one had 285. We spent some time comparing these numbers and wiring them in different ways. We finished up the lesson by reading the book. It was interesting for kids to compare their own experience with counting the seeds to the experience of the kids in the book.

This was a fun fall lesson and definitely one I will be doing in the future! There are a lot of grade levels that I could apply this lesson with.

                                                       

Monster Multiplication

Students are give a worksheet that lays out the criteria for how the activity goes.

Then, the kids roll a die to determine the shape of their monster and then have to roll and multiply to figure out how many eyes, horns, teeth, arms, legs, etc. their monster would have. Kids love this activity because it bridges math and art. This can then be displayed for others to see.

Third Grade: Find It First


Find It First is a simple game that can be used to practice many different skills. It is a quick game for 2 players. Once the first round is over, 2 new players can take their place.



On
the board or a piece of card write the answers to the facts that are to be studied. For example, to study multiplication facts for 7 write the answers randomly over the board or card. I then add a few random numbers also. I like to use a small whiteboard.

Make sure the numbers are where the children can reach them with a pointer or a ruler. The two players then stand either side of the numbers. The caller or the teacher calls a number fact, e.g. 4x7. The first player to find the answer and point to it scores a point. When we play it in the classroom, the first player to score 3 points is the winner. After that we choose two new players.

Second Grade: Count 'N Catch - A Skip Counting Game

Encourage your child to practice skip counting by turning number patterns into an interactive game of catch. It will get your child moving and learning, ball in hand!

What You Need:

  • One soft ball, two players

What You Do:

  1. Begin by telling your child you are going to practice skip counting while playing catch with the ball. Be sure to briefly review counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.
  2. Sit or stand about six feet away from your child with the ball in your hands. Say the first number in the skip counting pattern aloud, and as you're saying it, toss the ball to your child. Now it's his turn to say the next number in the pattern! For example, when skip counting by 2’s, you say, “two,” and pass the ball to your child who will say, “four" and then pass the ball back to you. Then you say “six,” the next number in the pattern, and toss it back to him. Continue to play the counting game this way, and challenge your child to count as high as he can.
  3. After playing the counting game with multiples of 2, play the same way with multiples of 5 and 10. For an extra challenge, try skip counting by 3’s and 4’s.
Variations:
Turn the counting game into a fun language arts activity by practicing with parts of speech in place of numbers. Play catch back and forth as you take turns listing nouns. See how many nouns your child can list before getting stuck! Next, pass the ball to each other while naming adjectives. Afterwards, play the game while listing verbs. For an extra challenge, try playing the game with adverbs, too. The possibilities are endless with Count 'N Catch. And getting some of those terms and concepts off the page and into the body, really helps kids remember them!

Third Grade: Real World Math

It's an old adage in the world of education, but it's true: math is all around us. You can try this simple activity with your child to get him thinking about the real world math you use everyday. While you're at it, you're strengthening key third grade math skills that you can expect your child to encounter all year.

What You Need:

  • Supermarket ad
  • Pencil
  • Paper

What You Do:

  1. Grab your weekly supermarket ad and look through the advertised specials together with your child. Ask her to circle 5-10 items she likes and then use these sale prices for practice with addition, subtraction, division and multiplication problems. (This activity can easily be substituted with restaurant take-out menus, clothes, game catalogs, or book order magazines.)
  2. What's the total cost? Ask your child to line up all the decimal points in order to correctly compute the total cost.
  3. How much change? As with addition, line up the decimal points before solving subtraction problems. Then have your child find the amount of change that you would receive from a $100 bill if you bought one item, two items or all items, depending on the price of the items.
  4. How much for five? Your child should solve multiplication with decimal problems in the same manner as he would normally solve multiplication problems, but they must remember to move the decimal point over in the answer as many places as are in the problem. Have him find the total cost of purchasing 5 of the most expensive item.
  5. How much if we split it? Division with decimals simply requires your child to include a decimal point in his answer directly above the decimal point in the dividend (the number being divided). Then have your child calculate how much each person should pay if 2 people split the total cost of the groceries, rounding their answer to the nearest cent.
While this activity offers lots of fun and challenge even when it's done occasionally, it's even better if you make it a regular feature of your weekly shopping. Do it often, and your third grader will thrive in math--but even better, will be prepared to be a savvy consumer for life.

This two-player game is a fun way to practice multiplication facts! You'll use a pair of dice to determine the numbers you will multiply with. The product determines whether you've hit a single, double, triple, or home run! Help your third grader improve his confidence with multiplication by reviewing facts in this fun new way.

What You Need:

What You Do:

  1. Determine team names and write them in the score sheet. Roll the dice to see who goes first.
  2. Players take turns going "up to bat" by rolling the two dice and multiplying the two numbers shown. If a player gives a correct answer, they may look for the product on the Hitting Chart. (It's at the bottom of your game board.) The chart will show where the players can move their marker to on the game board.
  3. Each player may continue their turn until they get 3 outs. An out is received by saying an incorrect answer or by "hitting" a low number. Home runs should be recorded with tallies.
  4. Play for 5 innings. Then add up the number of home runs to see which player's won the game!

Variations:

  • Change the numbers in the hitting chart.
  • Change the operation to addition or subtraction.

Exploring Technology in the Elementary Classroom


Time Math by Recession Apps LLC


            Time Math is targeted to children in the second grade.  I could see this app used for students beyond second grade if they were still struggling with telling time.  This app is free and can easily be found on the app store for Apple products.  The specific math area of this app is the concept of time.  This app provides five different levels that can be explored.  The first level provides information on how to tell time.  The user learns what the hour and minute hands are used for.  The next level consists of asking the user “What time is it?”  The user then has the choice to select the intervals that will be asked.  These include: easy (hours), medium (fifteen minutes), hard (five minutes), harder (hours and five minutes), and hardest (hours and minutes).  The user is asked this each time they select one of the four levels.  The app generates a clock with a set time in relation to the difficulty selected and the user is asked to pick the correct answer out of three options.  The next level is “Set the Time” and asks the user to drag the hour and minute hand on the clock to the time that is indicated.  The last two levels are “What time will it be?” and “What time was it?”  Both of these levels require students to drag the hour and minute hand around the clock to reach the requested time. The graphics and design of this app is aesthetically pleasing.  The app is also very easy to navigate and allows for some many different difficulty levels, which is great for users who are just being introduced to telling time all the way through students who are more advanced.  When teaching a lesson about time, I think having this app projected on the board and/or giving each student an iPad to use with this app would be a great way to demonstrate time and walk through some problems together.  Instead of doing a worksheet, students could spend some time going through problems on their own.

            Academic Skill Builders is a free website with a plethora of fun math games.  The great thing about this website is that the user can select whatever grade level and subject they would like.  The grades range from first to sixth and the subject levels include shapes, counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, integers, money, time, decimals, fractions, ration and proportion, and algebra.  Therefore, this website is great for all elementary students.  For the most part, the grade levels are on point.  This website appears to be set up to allow students the chance to practice math skills through fun and competitive games.  Parents, teachers, and administrators can also be at ease when having students online because the designers of this website were conscious about online safety. “Private” games can be set up with a password, so a student and his or her friends could organize games to play against each other in a private game.  “Public” games can be joined by anyone at anytime but there is no contact between the outside players and the student. The website also monitors player names and blocks inappropriate ones.  One of my favorite games I stumbled across while exploring this website was Jumping Chicks.  This game would be perfect for kindergarten and first grade students because the purpose of the game is to match the number to a pile of leaves that has the same number.  Your chick then jumps to that pile of leaves and the player is asked to complete the same steps again to keep your chick moving forward.  This is a fun and easy way to practice counting from one to ten. If ever in the computer lab or near computers and students finish their work before others, this would be a great website to have students visit until everyone was completed.  Having a math station in the classroom could also promote the use of this website.  Students would be able to select this math website, as opposed to a math worksheet, and have fun while still practicing their math skills.  This website, and the other website and apps I chose, provide visual learners with engaging animations to look at and allows game-based learning in a fun and interactive way.

            Funbrain Math Arcade is intended for students in grades one to eight; however, after playing through this game at multiple grade levels, I feel that this game should really only be applicable for students in third grade and higher.  The reason I say this is because I do not think that students in second grade or below would have the proper hand-eye coordination and reading skills that are necessary for this game.  I had a hard time doing it myself so I have a feeling that very young students would struggle with the ability to select the right answer and figuring out how the game works.  Regardless, this website is great because it allows students to play in the format of a board game and has 25 different math games for them to play.  I think this would be great to use as a mini math activity maybe once a week.  Students could login with their saved password and complete five rolls on the game board, which means five games.  I would guess this would take around fifteen minutes. Depending on the grade level entered, the games ask students to add, match, adjust height and distance, subtract, multiply, divide, etc. A few things that I wish could be changed about this game is that the levels do not provide a lot of feedback for students who struggle and may need assistance or a hint.  However, the student is allowed to start that game level again after so many attempts.  I do like that the each game is fairly short and keeps the student motivated to win and unlock the next game.  Each game level also provides so much variety that could be tied into lessons.  For instance, one game level takes place inside a pyramid tomb and has images of Egyptian sarcophagi.  This could tie in nicely with a geography and social studies lesson on Ancient Egypt, as well as, reading aloud or independently reading books about mummies, pharaohs and pyramids.  There are a lot of options for using this website within the classroom. 

Todo Math by Enuma Inc.

This free app is by far the best math app I came across.  I love this app because the logistics and layout are fantastic.  Additionally, this app is perfect for student just beginning math, as well as for students who are up to second grade.  This app covers many specific math areas, such as: counting and cardinality, number operations, mathematical reasoning, time and money, and geometry.  The intended purpose of this app is to allow students to trace numbers and shapes, practice patterning, subtraction, adding, multiplying, and so much more.  I think the number and shape tracing is a great addition to this app; it’s probably my favorite part about the app because it would be such a huge help for students who are just learning how to write their numbers and drawing their basic shapes. I can easily see this app being used within the classroom because of all the great features it has.  The teacher could demonstrate how to use the app and then the students could follow along and complete each number and shape together.  A lot of the levels seem to follow the same order; therefore, it would be easy to have the teacher and young students complete the lower levels together to make sure that every student understands the process and the content.  This app seems like such a great tool to use because of the way it asks students to select the numbers and then draw them as well.  I feel like it reinforces their learning and knowledge. One downfall to this app is that although it says it is free, there are limited levels that can be played on the free version and buying this app is incredibly expensive.  However, I could justify buying this app for $24 each because it is so comprehensive and of high quality.  It also changes displays according to the seasons, which is cute, but could also be integrated into learning the new season each time it changed.  Lastly, this app was built with the classroom in mind.  If teachers do not have the budget to buy Todo Math, teachers may qualify for the school year’s Todo Math Grant Program.  Additionally, this app has a web-based teacher dashboard that tracks progress, students can play Todo Math at home on parents' iPhone or iPad and their progress is synched to your teacher dashboard, and school level management allows for supporting device sharing between classrooms (cart system) and multi-teacher management of school account.
